On Friday 21st May 2010 hundreds of volunteers will be in libraries across Northern Ireland to deliver fun taster sessions on the internet, e-mail, online banking, shopping and much much more.
|

The event, now in its seventh year, is supported by the Department of Finance and Personnel. Hilary Dickson, the event’s Programme Manager at Business in the Community is urging anyone interested to register with their local library now. She said: “Hundreds of Silver Surfers have already booked their sessions at local libraries and places are becoming very limited. It isn’t too late to book a place, but I’d urge anyone interested to get in contact with their library right away to avoid disappointment. Silver Surfers’ Day always catches the imagination of the over-50’s and we’re delighted that so many local companies have become involved this year to provide volunteers.”
Basil Davidson, Digital Inclusion Manager, Department of Finance and Personnel adds: “The Department is delighted to continue to support Silver Surfers’. Digital Inclusion is a top priority for government and it is important that access to online resources is made available through ‘nidirect’ for all generations. At the Silver Surfer sessions, individuals will find out how easy it is to get online, send an email and discover how to do things such as booking an MOT or even applying for a passport through ‘nidirect’. Ultimately, it’s about helping them to save time and save money.”
Mrs Brown, a Silver Surfer from Larne relates her experience from last year: “For my age group it is nice to have someone who understands and takes the time to explain computers. It was easier than expected and at a level I could understand. I can now email my family.’
Libraries across the province are hosting Silver Surfers’ sessions on Friday 21, as well as over 50 library branches and other locations across Northern Ireland. To book a Silver Surfers’ session contact your local library.
